DIRECTOR CHIL KONG INVITED!
The Mikado Project, a feature film by Chil Kong and loosely based on the play THE MIKADO PROJECT by Ken Narasaki and Doris Baizley, follows a struggling theater company in danger of losing their funding when their Lead Actor Jace (played by David Lee McInnis) departs their latest production for a television show. Believing that “desperation is the mother of all invention", the Artistic Director of the mythical "Angry Buddha Theatre Company" (played by Allen C. Liu) decides that he is going to do something totally controversial - Gilbert & Sullivan's iconic operetta - THE MIKADO. Naturally, an Asian American theater company that has previously focused on “protest theater” would be ummm... conflicted about such a choice, given that The Mikado has long been the bastion of Caucasians who have tended to ignore it's history as a commentary on Victorian social mores, and focus more on acting stereotypes and poking fun at Asians and Asian features.
Will the Company (played by Tamlyn Tomita, Rizwan Manji, Gerald McCullough, Erin Quill, Raymond J. Lee, Yuri Tag, and Ryun Yu) hold it together long enough to reclaim both the music, the show, and the love they have for one another? Or will everything fall apart even as the “show goes on”? With iconic music by the team of Gilbert & Sullivan, and hot choreography from members of two of the hottest Dance Crews around – Ben Chung of The Jabbawockeez and Yuri Tag of Kabba Modern, we invite you to enter the world of The Mikado Project.
Tuesday, November 9 @ 5PM screening is FREE!
