Synopsis
In the bleak landscape west of bustling Teheran, hardworking ostrich farmer Karim (Reza Naji, named best actor at the Berlin International Film Festival) lives a simple life with his wife and three children. When he’s unexpectedly fired, he resorts to driving a gypsy cab through the busy streets of Teheran, where his upper-class fares—tainted by the trappings of capitalism and technology—begin to test his honesty and kindness. From the Oscar-nominated director of Children of Heaven. The film highlights Majidi's classic approach to a morality tale, drawing from Italian neo-realism, with social-realist undertones and a naturalistic almost documentary style. The story of a decent man's decline in a material world and Majidi's personal vision in telling it, its light humor, and devoid of sentimentality, it was Iran's Oscar submission this year. (see Letter to the President for another view of Iran under President Ahmadinejad).
