Instead of filming yet another portrayal about "the real life of Che Guevara," this documentary's posthumous approach explores the influence he has left behind, the myth, not the truth. Stating that they seek to present words, not factors, directors Duarte and Marino explore the malleability of the icon in a remarkably straightforward way. Filmed in five languages (Spanish, Cantonese, Arabic, German, and English), Personal Che is at once intimate and philosophical. the stories presented are wide in range and often contradictory: Che Guevara was a communist, a neo-Nazi, a Chinese rebel, a murderer, a saint. There is a sense that all are real, that "everyone can have their Che." The fervent and active passion behind each retelling lends not credence, but understanding. It doesn't matter which perspectives are true or false. What matters is that world-wide people believe in them, and powerfully. This documentary is a wonderful exercise in humanity, myth, and where the iconic and indexical meet.
