A young woman, Joy, goes missing, but she's not the focus of Joe Lawlor and Christine Molloy's wholly original feature. The focal point is Helen, the young woman who's asked to re-enact Joy's unexplained disappearance for the police investigators. Helen is such a lost soul that you could easily imagine her disappearing into the woods, like Joy. She becomes totally fascinated by the lost girl and gradually becomes engulfed by this obsession: as if a void is drawing her in. Lawlor and Molloy's experience of working in community and experimental theatre shows in their entirely fresh approach to both performance and narrative, building Helen's story in deliberate slow-motion and with artful construction. Lawlor and Molloy's short film, Joy, also screening in this year's festival, is the precursor to this feature and also the end of a cycle of works entitled Civic Life that reflected on the connections between community and environment.
