Celebrated veterans Bruno Ganz (Wings of Desire) and Senta Berger (The Quiller Memorandum) are a delight to behold in Sophie Heldman’s brave debut drama, an intimate and affecting tale about aging, the bonds and boundaries of love, and life’s finite nature. Based on the true story of friends of Heldman’s, Colors in the Dark sketches an initially sunny tale of Fred (Ganz) and Anita (Berger), happily married for 50 years and living a well-to-do suburban life.

In a hushed medieval village on a hilltop in southern Italy, an elderly shepherd tends his flock. He is sick and his days are numbered, but a daily glass of water mixed with the church floor’s dust is his medicine. As day-to-day living pushes ever forward, the cosmic interconnectedness of all things is slowly revealed in this shifting portrait of an isolated Calabrian village, populated by bleating goats who run loose through the houses and fields.

Mike Mills (Thumbsucker) directs a star-studded cast in his latest indie gem, a semi-autobiographical story about two men’s search for love at very different points in life.

In this story of two Istanbuls, the old vistas vs. the manic present, Mithat, an elder in the increasingly young city, struggles to preserve the city’s rich past through otherwise mundane possessions.  Mithat befriends new caretaker Ali, a provincial Turk who hopes to usher his family into the new era stocked with the comforts of urban modernity. When a minor earthquake incites his neighbors to demand demolition and reconstruction of their apartment complex, the octogenarian stands his ground. In her first feature-length fiction, veteran documentarian Pelin Esmer extracts deft, honest performances from her amateur cast, including her own Uncle as Mithat. 10 to 11 takes hold just as Mr. Esmer takes up battle for a city that's slipping away from him.
