A hapless misfit duckling grows up to be a beautiful swan. Fairy Tale Expert Jack Zipes to Introduce!
A mislaid egg is surreptitiously brought into a barnyard at dawn, and an “ugly duckling” is hatched into a tightly structured farmyard of fowl that does not accept his nonconformity. Ostracized, the hapless fellow questions his lot in life as his loyalty is spurned and his selfless acts of heroism go unnoticed. The seasons change, the hatchlings come of age, and a beautiful flock of swans flies overhead. His true identity discovered, the cygnet learns he can fly and soars magnificently above the coop.
Award-winning Russian animator Garri Bardin’s beautiful adaptation of Andersen’s famous children’s tale is a visual feast. Expressive and beautifully sculpted stop-motion puppet characters donned with real feathers sing and dance in comedic musical numbers accompanied by Tchaikovsky’s ballets played by the Russian National Philharmonic Orchestra. The Ugly Duckling is a masterfully crafted testament to the power of enduring hope and beauty--subversive enough to be banned from Russian television, while warming hearts and winning fans with audiences in children’s film festivals world-wide.
