Photographer Alec Soth Present
A fascinating look at those few Americans who truly want to disappear, European filmmakers Laure Flammarion and Arnaud Uyttenhove’s gorgeous documentary follows renowned Minneapolis-based photographer Alec Soth on his search for the reclusive.
Lugging around his large format camera, Soth travels the US to photograph these modern recluses for his project, ‘Broken Manual.’ From isolated mountain cabins to caves in the desert, they have sought solace in the inaccessible, the far-flung, the back of beyond. Flammarion and Uyttenhove succeeded in capturing in moving sequences both the essence of Soth’s work and the humanity in and shroud of mystery surrounding the people he portrays.
Best known for his large-format portraits, Alec Soth has exhibited widely. The Walker Art Center presented an acclaimed survey of his work, entitled ‘From Here to There” in 2010. Somewhere to Disappear chronicles this fascinating artist at work and presents a compelling view of America, men, and the dream of escape.
