TOYNBEE IDEA, IN MOVIE 2001, RESURRECT DEAD, ON PLANET JUPITER
Hundreds of tiles bearing some variation on the above cryptic message have been found embedded in city streets as far apart as Philadelphia, New York, St. Louis, and in the South American cities of Santiago and Buenos Aires. First appearing in the 1980’s, the enigma of the tiles -- who made them and why -- has been the sole consuming passion of Philadelphia house painter and aspiring artist and musician Justin Duerr.
Duerr’s search leads him from newspaper clippings, to hijacked local news broadcast, to a David Mamet play, and even to a Jupiter colonization organization. His search also moves inward, examining his desire to connect to the zealous tiler and what this may say about his equally obsessive personality. As an outsider himself, the search may be his own attempt to find a pattern within the chaos of the world.
An enthralling, artfully constructed portrait of global communication, Resurrect Dead: The Mystery of the Toynbee Tiles will take audiences down the rabbit hole that lies just beneath their seats.
