In Raavanan, longtime director Mani Ratman brings us a modern interpretation of the ancient Sanskrit epic, the Ramayana. The film features Tamil superstars Vikram, Aishwarya Rai, and Prithvirajand, as well as a host of talented technicians as seen in the stunning cinematography and scenography.
The film's plot is set into motion when Veeriya, played by Vikram, a bandit clan leader with a divided reputation and personality, kidnaps the Chief inspector's wife to avenge his sister's death. Unable to kill her, Veeriya falls in love with his captive, all the while doing a masterful job of evading the Chief inspector and his task force. Culminating in a series of twists that challenge traditional notions of heroism and commitment, Ratman’s skill crosses provincial language boundaries as one of India’s most popular directors.
In the tradition of blockbusting Bollywood films, Raavanan is filled to the brim with energetic, stylistically choreographed dancing scenes. -Adapted fromStockholm Film Festival
