“Sound Check: Using Music in Film”

Join us in the Festival Central Pavilion, across the street from the St. Anthony Main Theatre, for an intriguing, entertaining and informative discussion about the many ways in which music can be used in film, including how to handle licensing issues and other legal complexities. Panelists include moderator Ken Abdo, Vice President of Lommen Abdo Law Film and Chair of the Entertainment Law Department, who is also a multi-instrumentalist/songwriter and former disc jockey who knows music, the music business and the law. Chris Osgood, VP of McNally-Smith College of Music, founder of Springboard for the Arts, label manager at Twin tone Records, founder of seminal punk band Suicide Commandoes, 1989 Minnesota Music Awards Rock Guitarist of the Year and 2006 MN Rock and Country Hall of Fame inductee.  Jed Schlegelmilch, director of “Absence/Presence” (2011 MSP Int’l Film Fest). Christie Healey, a non-attorney specialist in entertainment media legal affairs at Lommen Abdo Law Firm, with a thirty-year career in entertainment media, including stints in the music business in her native England as a studio business affairs executive and an independent consultant. Daron Walker, Modern Music Creative Director, is a producer, music supervisor, remixer, sound designer and DJ.  Craig Rice, currently teaching advanced filmmaking at MCAD and music business at McNally Smith College of Music, has a long career first as a musician, then as a music executive, filmmaker, and music supervisor on many films and TV series.

With a focus on the filmmaking scene in Minnesota, this panel discussion will address just what it requires these days to make and finance a film in Minnesota. Panelists include moderator Dan Satorius, an owner and attorney at Satorius Law Film, PLLC, Chair of Advisory Board IFP/MN, a professional musician and award-winning filmmaker who brings an entertainment background to his law practice. Mara Pelecis, the director of “Souvenirs: Healing After War” (2011 MSP Int’l Film Fest). Dan Tanz, the director, and Mohannad Ghawanmeh, an actor/producer of “Triumph67” (2011 MSP Int’l Film Fest). Hisham Bizri, an internationally acclaimed Lebanese-American filmmaker, "A Film" (2011 MSP Int’l Film Fest), and Associate Professor of Film at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities.
