Based on a German bestseller about a literary lie of mammoth proportions, Alain Gsponer’s most recent film is a deft, playful romantic comedy with comparisons to Morvern Callar and Priceless. Featuring internationally known German star Daniel Bruhl (Inglorious Basterds, Goodbye Lenin!) and the much-touted Hannah Herzsprung (Four Minutes) as his love interest, the film is an ingenious farce about trying to have your cake and eat it, too.
Bruhl delivers an amusing, endearing performance as the shy, hapless waiter who gains overnight success as an author, without writing a single word, when he finds a throwaway romance novel in a trash bin. Claiming to be the once down-and-out, bohemian author, he manages to enlist a large bookselling chain for the obligatory author’s book tour and signing. At this point, a gang of brutal facts assaults his celebratory reputation, but not without a charming denouement with the intercession of Ms. Herzsprung. A very good date movie.
