What might have been a delightful shot across the bow of domineering Hollywood studios, however, falls a bit short. - Hollywood Reporter
This hilarious mockumentary on the entertainment industry by Belgian writer/director Frédéric Sojcher takes a stiff-fingered jab at both Hollywood and the U.S. government at the same time probing European cinema’s forgotten past.
Under scrutiny from a CIA agent, a documentary filmmaker in Paris accidentally uncovers a plot by Hollywood to suppress the European movie industry. Played by actress Maria de Medeiros, best known for her role in Pulp Fiction, working on a doc about legendary French actress Micheline Presle (Devil in the Flesh), the shaggy dog story hinges on a 1939 Presle movie that never made it to the screen because of the war, or was it Hollywood? Sophisticated visuals, elegant color, cameos by Wim Wenders, Volker Schlondorff, Emir Kusturica (art house regulars) enhance a mystification game to find Presle’s old director. Industry insiders and cinema fans alike will thoroughly enjoy the free-wheeling lampooning and characterization of the movie biz. (from 2010 Karlovy Vary Film Festival raves)
