Taking the 1940 massacre of more than 15,000 Polish Army offi cers and intellectuals at the hands of Soviet troops (who blamed it on the Nazis), Wajda interlaces multiple stories from the early days of WWII – a young woman searches the battlefi elds for her missing husband, a general takes a stand against the German propaganda machine, an offi cer struggles with his own complicity in the eventual slaughter – to create an indelible study of national identity and self-discovery. “I see my film as a story of a family separated forever by Katyn,” Wajda said at the Berlin Fest International premiere in Feb. The facts, known in Poland for many, were finally acknowledged by Mikhail Gorbachev in 1990, after the Soviets claimed the massacre was perpetuated by the Nazis. Emphasizing a “big screen” viewing, he said he wanted to tell the story again especially for young moviegoers in Poland who are moving away from the past.
