Director: Lars von Trier
Danish Dogme director Lars von Trier's stylistic inventions (the chalk lines of Dogville) and preoccupation with masochistic women (Breaking the Waves, Dancer in the Dark) has given way to a hilarious mainstream morality parable in The Boss of it All. |
Shot on a shoestring budget, The Boss of it All tells the story of Kristoffer (Jens Albinus), a down-on-his-luck actor who is hired by the owner of a high tech firm confronted by employee problems, to impersonate a CEO during its startup period. Posing as the company head, a mysterious man named Svend E., whom none of the employees have ever met, Kristoffer is caught in a scheme to sell off the company to a racist Icelander, while any possible financial fallout would be his little problem. As Kristoffer begins to unmask his role as the long-absent boss, everything from screaming matches with employees to sexual favors ensue. And Von Trier's off-the-cuff approach may seem a departure from his previous Dogmatic vows of "cinematic chastity". This uproarious romp of moral ambiguity will have you rolling in the aisles. Cast: Jens Albinus, Peter Gantzler, Iben Hjejle In Danish, English, Icelandic and Russian with English subtitles, Denmark/Sweden/Iceland/Italy/France/Norway/ Finland/ Germany, 99 minutes, 2006, 35mm |
