Director: Joachim Trier Two aspiring young writers, Philip and Erik, simultaneously mail off manuscripts of their just-completed novels. Almost overnight, Philip becomes a major figure in the Oslo literary scene, while Erik’s work is rejected. Philip’s romantic involvement with Kari, however, touches off a ‘psychosis’ that requires months of hospitalization . . . |
A year later, when Philip and Kari move to Paris, Erik encourages Philip to resume his writing career. Philip’s effort to recapture, yet move forward, in his creative work is key to themes underlying Director Joachim Trier’s brilliant film. A film of energy and melancholy, Reprise touches on the aspirations of youth, of friendship and artistic creativity, along with personal dilemmas and inevitable demands of real life. Reviewers have pointed to some comparisons with Jules and Jim (including cinematography), widely-known French New Wave classic. As his first full-length feature, director Joachim Trier’s film was recently listed as one of the 10 Best Films of 2007 by several European film critics.
