BEST OF THE FEST:

Oak St. Cinema:

Fri., Sat., Sun. at 7:15 p.m.

Director: Chris Kraus

A surprise new German prison and music drama,  Four Minutes, winner of the recently-completed 25th Annual Mpls/St.Paul International Film Festival “Audience Poll”, is scheduled for a 7:15 Friday through Sunday run (May 4-6) at the Oak Street Cinema, 309 Oak St. SE, Minneapolis.

Winning raves from the local fest audience, as well as being up for nine “Lola’s” (Germany’s equivalent of the Oscar) this week in Berlin,  Four Minutes  is the story of a rebellious young girl imprisoned for murder, in a psychological duel with her conservative prison piano teacher as they bind together in a music finale revealing a prodigy at the keyboard.  (In German;  English subtitles).  Tickets at the door.

The film won “best of fest” in the audience poll among more than 80 films voted on by audiences during the just-ended festival Sunday.

An unexpected audience hit as well in Germany,  Four Minutes  bears out critical praise for a revitalized German film “wave” which also saw this year’s Oscar winner, The Lives of Others.

Four Minutes stars veteran actress Monica Bleibtreu as the piano teacher (former E. Berlin theatrical presence with  the previously almost unknown Hannah Herzsprung in her first leading role as the pianist/inmate.  Film was directed by former journalist/screenwriter Chris Kraus, 40, who had worked more than eight years to write and produce the film (from Berlin Film Festival ’07 notes).

Cast: Monica Bleibtreu; Hannah Herzsprung; Sven Pippig

In German with English subtitles, 112 minutes, 2006, 35mm

Presented by: University of Minnesota European Studies Consortium
