Director: Lanre Olabisi The date is August 1, and Tunde is holding his graduation party after putting it off all summer because of the secret surprise guest that he has invited to join the family. The arrival of his father, Dipo, all the way from Nigeria (August was the only time he could make it) draws very mixed reactions from the members of his family. |
Some of them, like Tunde, greet him with open arms, having eagerly awaited the day that he would return. Others, like his wife, Rhonda, turn their back on him, still angry over an unknown incident from the past. As the night progresses, Tunde desperately tries to make his one graduation wish of bringing peace to his family come true. But when Dipo asks a favor of Rhonda, it becomes abundantly clear that he may have had other motives for coming back to a place he no longer calls home. Fueled by fantastic performances and carefully-timed dramatic precision, August the First showcases the talent of writer/director Lanre Olabisi and puts him on the map as an important new voice in American filmmaking. Cast: Ian Alsup, Dennis Green, Kerisse Hutchinson, Joy Merriweather
