New Screening! Saturday, April 28th - 5:00 pm - Bell Auditorium Director: Gerardo Olivares As this “ethno-romp” illustrates, where there is a will, there is way! We meet football fans from three remote corners of the earth: the steppes of Mongolia, the rainforests of the Amazon and the Tenere Desert of Niger, respectively, who devise (often hilarious and farcical) means to overcome their isolated locations (500 Km or more distance away from a town with a t.v. screen) in order to watch the final match of the 2002 World Cup (Germany vs. Brazil). |
While true to the beauty of the settings and the cultures being photographed, director Gerardo Olivare and writer Chema Roderiguez (The Railroad All-Stars), albeit in light of the world craze for football, present their subjects in their similarities with respect to others – everywhere – refreshing and “feel good” here, as opposed to highlighting different-ness. Greeted with applause and genuine enjoyment at its 2007 Berlin Film Festival debut, The Great Match will undoubtedly touch the hearts of football fans and general audiences across the globe. Cast: Shag Humar Khan, Abu Aldanish,Zeinolda Igaza, Kenshleg Alen Khan, Atibou Aboubacar, Mohamed Hassan Dit Blinde, Ahmed Alansar English subtitles (filmed in Mongolia, Brazil-Amazon, Niger), 88 minutes, 2006, 35mm.
