Director: Joel Palombo

Swaroop, a young Muslim boy from a caste of musicians, leaves his Rajasthani desert village in search of work with his Uncle Nizam. An innocent and curious 14 year-old boy, Swaroop’s world quickly expands as he and Nizam join up with Nizam’s musician friends who perform at roadside locations.

Nizam takes opium regularly and scams money in any way he can; his greed and use of religious rhetoric contribute to the break-up of the musicians’ group, and Swaroop goes to the city on his own. The boy tries to adapt to his new circumstances of being a traveling musician in a world he has just discovered, including playing the “rustic hill-billy kid artist” sidekick to a foreign-returned Indian musician who plays the banjo for elite urbanites. The film features traditional Sufi music with a twist of fusion.  A charming film,  but leaves the viewer worried about what will become of traditional India and young musicians like Swaroop.
