Director: Jesper Ganslandt

Five childhood friends just finishing high school and trying to decide what to do with the rest of their lives spend one last summer together in their hometown of Falkenberg, a small burg on the water in southeast Sweden.

One of the hopefuls longs to get away from the dying town, overwhelmingly dominated by senior citizens, another often travels but always returns, one never wants to leave his town, one wants to finance a catering company “Breakfast in Bed” by burglarizing houses. Reminiscent of Fellini’s classic I Vitelloni, this daring Swedish film about adolescent friendship, memories, saying goodbye and stumbling ahead toward decisions about their lives, first-time director Jesper Ganslandt’s part-poetic, part-sociological snapshot of small-town life features non-professional actors and largely improvised dialog (it took a year to edit). The skill and mood of the film have earned him marks as a new and distinctive talent.

Falkenberg Farewell was Sweden’s Foreign Language entry for the 2006 Oscars.
