This documentary about Henrik Ibsen follows the lion-maned dramatist through his whole life, from early shame about his father’s fall from grace because of bankruptcy, through bitterness over the conservative contemporary public life, to his later years as a national institution, whom tourists would flock to see on his way to his very punctual, daily lunch at the Grand Café in Oslo.

Disciplined by his wife Suzannah into overcoming his natural tendency towards laziness, Ibsen is today recognised as the founder of modern drama. We meet him “in person” through monologues played by Fridtjov Såheim, and the film takes care to place his life in context with other prominent figures of the day, like Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson, Edvard Munch and Knut Hamsun. Film made in conjunction with centennial of Ibsen’s death.
